Todays schools environments struggle with growing class sizes, and shrinking budgets, which ultimately impact IT decisions. Affordable network storage solutions are becoming a necessity for schools across the nation.

Due to todays economy and budget cuts, many hardware/storage purchases at educational organizations are constricted by either limiting Client Access Licenses (CALs) or reducing the number of students which can access the network resources. These limitations put an undue stress on both the IT administration and organization to effectively administer technology resources across the school.

For a school of 1500 students, 225 or more students could be on the network at any given time, and with CALs typically costing $35, that's nearly $8000 dollars not spent on hardware, but instead just to give students the ability to access the network to save homework, share research or save class data. If a school cannot afford the cost of Access Licenses, then the results will be fewer students which will have access to school computer resources, and/or fewer resources all together.

The Synology DiskStation offers an affordable alternative to PC file servers by offering CAL-less Network Storage! No access licenses are required to access the network when using a Synology DiskStation, offering upwards of 512 concurrent connections (or 512 students, each with one mapped connection) on the Desktop DS1010+, or the Rack Mount RS409+/RS409RP+. Using a CAL-less licensing solution can potentially save thousands of dollars in Client Access Licenses; this amount of money can be used to purchase more storage, additional programs, or new technology tools to improve the quality of technology education.

When the Synology DiskStations and RackStations are used with the industry recognized DiskStation Manager, the DiskStation offers ADS Support (supporting upwards to 100,000 Users, and 100,000 groups). This provides enough User and Group accounts to meet the needs of most educational organizations. With each of the user accounts created on a Synology DiskStation, an automatically created private "home"" folder is created for each student that signs into the DiskStation. This automatically generated private home folder eliminates the redundant labor of manually creating these private folders - allowing administrators to save time and redundancy.

Other storage benefits of using the Synology DiskStation with DiskStation Manager

  • RAID redundancy, providing redundancy against hard drive failure
  • RAID Expansion, migration - provides the ability of storage to grow incrementally, either with larger hard drives or additional hard drives

The Synology DiskStation is the ideal solution for network storage in educational settings. The CAL-less licensing model saves thousands of dollars for each school within a district while offering the benefits of joining ADS Domains, automatically generating private "home" folder accounts for each student, and a host of other built-in features all for one low operating cost.
